East Hampton shocks Sayville for 'A' title

Mario Olaya saw open space in the middle of the field with less than a minute to play. The East Hampton senior moved from the left side to the top of the box and fired a shot at the goal.

Olaya's shot slipped off the hands of Sayville goalkeeper Rich Geiger and into the net with 34.4 seconds left, giving No. 2 East Hampton a 2-1 victory over No. 1 Sayville in the Suffolk Class A boys soccer final at Dowling Sports Complex. It is the first county title for East Hampton (14-1-2), which plays Jericho in the Long Island championship/Southeast Regional final Sunday at 4 p.m. at Adelphi.

"I went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and I scored," Olaya said. "I thought he was going to stop it but it went in, and that's what counts."

Olaya, who leads East Hampton with 21 goals and 10 assists, received two yellow cards for excessive celebration that resulted in a red card and a one-game suspension, making him unable to play in Sunday's game, according to Section XI boys soccer coordinator Mike Huey.

East Hampton got on the board early when Milton Farez kicked in a rebound off Geiger's hands in the seventh minute. Sayville's Matt Leshinger made it through a crowd of players inside the 6-yard box and knocked the ball in to tie the score at 1 with 4:54 to play.

Esteban Aguilar made 11 saves for the Bonackers and Geiger made six saves for defending state champion Sayville (15-2-1).
