We continue our list of the Top 30 athletes to watch in the 2012-13 school year with Northport girls lacrosse superstar Cortney Fortunato.
Fortunato has been on the varsity squad at Northport ever since she was a seventh grader and has shown no signs of slowing down to be the top player on Long Island in the next spring. As just a sophomore in the 2011 season, Fortunato scored half of her team's 18 goals in the New York State Class A semifinal against Lakeland/Panas.
The school record was 10 goals, and as Newsday's James Crepea mused following that 2011 semifinal, "Coaches and teammates were pulling for her to break the school record of 10 goals in a game, a record she undoubtedly will shoot for next year."
Guess what? She did just that in 2012.
Fortunato equaled the school record for goals, 10, in just the fourth game of the season in a 22-8 routing of Commack. Fortunato scored 65 goals and 34 assists, good for 99 points in the 2012 season for the Tigers. She scored at least a goal in every game, averaging just over 4 goals every time she stepped onto the field
Northport, a usual power in the Long Island girls lacrosse landscape however fell in the semifinals this season to a pesky upstart East Islip team, 8-7.
Fortunato is undoubtedly looking forward to getting back on top of New York state for one final season with Northport before she heads off to Notre Dame to play lacrosse.
