At one point, North Shore trailed by six. The Vikings' defense looked out of sorts; their offense discombobulated, and that's when they were fortunate enough to have possession. Here were the defending county champs, and the rout was on in the Nassau Class C girls lacrosse final.

But wait. Cold Spring Harbor was the opponent. A game between these rivals that didn't trigger everyone's sweat glands? Don't be silly.

Amanda Johansen led a furious rally to help the Vikings tie the score late, and Meaghan Brennan's free-position goal with 1:24 left in the second overtime lifted North Shore over the top-seeded Seahawks, 14-13, Wednesday at Adelphi.

"I was reading the goalie and thought stick side could be open and I had to get it done," Brennan, a sophomore, said. She got it done, scoring her first goal of the postseason and the most crucial of her career on a bouncer from 4 yards. "There's no feeling like this."

Johansen scored five of her seven goals in the second half for No. 2 North Shore. Tess Korten added two goals and Micaela Dussel (three goals) tied it for North Shore (16-3) with 40.4 seconds left in regulation. "This is amazing," Dussel said. "We got it done when we had to, but they really made us work for it."

They usually do. The last five meetings between the teams have been decided by one goal. CSH (16-3) had won the previous three games, including 12-11 in the regular season.

Kelly Anne Sherlock (five goals) had given the Seahawks a 7-1 lead with 7:38 left in the first half. North Shore led 8-7 early in the second half, but goals by Holly Logan (four), Courtney Burke and Sherlock helped CSH build a 13-10 lead with 4:30 remaining. A considerable lead between these two teams? History's rules don't allow it.

"Party at Micaela's house!" a gleeful Johansen said. "We're gonna enjoy this."

And exhale.
